AOL’s Pinpoint Travel

On March 21, AOL launched Pinpoint Travel, the newest entry in a long list of sites for finding flights and hotels.

Pinpoint Travel is powered by Kayak, which launched last October. The user interface is great, but that’s not as important as the participating airlines. Any travel site will search fares from major U.S. airlines such as AirTran (oops, not Hotwire.com), American, America West, Continental, Delta, United, and US Airways. If you want to use discount carrier JetBlue — which unfortunately doesn’t offer service in Philadelphia — you’ll have to use Kayak, Mobissimo, or Yahoo FareChase. As far as I know, no travel site partners with Southwest; they force you to use their Web site.

Desktop Search Tools

Keeping up with new versions of software is a pain. Plus, once I get a stable platform, I’m in no hurry to upgrade and break it. However, recently my work PC was infected with a computer virus and I had to reload some applications, including Google Desktop Search.

I loaded the latest release, build number 20050227. (To find the build number, launch GDS and click on "About" at the bottom of the page.) Hmmm … GDS now indexes networked files that you have viewed. Is that new? I went through my paper files. Yup, when GDS launched in October 2004, it only indexed files on your hard drive.

For a good comparison matrix of the zillion or so desktop search tools, visit www.goebelgroup.com/desktopmatrix.htm.

Historical Stock Quotes

I used to use Yahoo Finance for historical stock quotes because their data went back to 1962. I noticed early in March, however, that they now cover January 1970-present. This aligns them pretty much with CBS MarketWatch, CNN/Money, Dow Jones' Factiva, and LexisNexis' QUOTE file. If you still need pre-1970 data, try Westlaw's Quotes Service, which as far as I can tell goes back to 1965.

The Original Google Versus Yahoo

By that I mean Lexis versus West. And Lexis has won the latest round in their heavyweight bout. They now have the Wall Street Journal Fulltext (from 1984) and various Factiva business news databases and will be putting up 2000 additional Factiva databases throughout the year. (The fine print states, however, that the WSJ and Factiva databases are outside of everyone’s contracts.)

The loss of the WSJ is bad news for West. They’ve switched their mega-news database searching to Dialog’s NewsRoom.
