Adios Butler

After almost 10 years, Ask has retired the eponymous butler Jeeves and rebranded itself Ask.com.  While they had the hood up, they also redesigned the homepage.

Gary Price at ResourceShelf has an excellent review of the new Ask.com.  [Disclosure: Gary is Director of Online Information Resources at Ask.com.  But if I didn’t trust him to be objective, I wouldn’t link to him.]

Remember AJ back in the nineties?  They bragged about their natural-language search capabilities.  But it flat-out just didn’t work.  You’d type a question like, “When did Alaska become a U.S. state?” and get back the answer, ”Are you interested in Alaska vacations?”  Multiply that by a few million queries and what do you get?  A bad rep.  The rebranding is supposed to remove that stigma.

Ask.com has also introduced Ask.com Maps.  Yes, they have satellite images.  (Yo … Yahoo, get with the program.  Your 3 biggest competitiors all integrate aerial photography with their maps.  And A9.com has street-level images.  Where you at?)  Ask.com Maps does this funny little tiling thing when I zoom in on my house.  But the resolution is crisp and I think I can actually see my car in the driveway.  They even offer animated driving and/or walking directions.

So … Is Ask.com any better than the old AJ?  You be the judge:

It Could Have Been Me

The NY Times [reg.required] reports that yesterday Apple sold its millionth download from the iTunes Music Store in less than 3 years.

The lucky 16 year old (naturally!) who bought Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” was also awaded a 20-inch iMac, 10 iPods and a $10,000 gift card for the iTunes store. Apple is also establishing a scholarship at the Juilliard School in his name.

If I’d have downloaded Muskrat Love yesterday, instead of waiting, that might have been me. Think about it: The Dan Giancaterino Scholarship, given for excellence in the euphonium. It rocks, no?

Do Not Call

Still have telemarketers calling at all hours of the night? Why, when it’s so easy to put a stop to it?

It surprises me how many people don’t know about the National Do Not Call Registry. This has been around for a while now - and while it is not fool-proof, it does stop a great deal of telemarketing calls - at least it has in my house.

Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website. You can register your home or mobile phone for free. Your registration will be effective for five years.

For PA residents there’s also a list just for us. To see if your state has a Do Not Call List, just search for your state name and “Do Not Call”.

Google Desktop 3

Today Google released version 3 of the Google Desktop. New features allow you to:

  • Unlock panels from the Sidebar and send them to friends
  • Password-protect GD
  • Index and search zip files
  • Search across all your computers at the same time

When you read that last item, did little bells go off in your head?

You have to enable the Search Across Computers feature. Here’s how it works, according to the GD features page:

In order to share your indexed files between your computers, we first copy this content to Google Desktop servers located at Google. This is necessary, for example, if one of your computers is turned off or otherwise offline when new or updated items are indexed on another of your machines. We store this data temporarily on Google Desktop servers and automatically delete older flies, and your data is never accessible by anyone doing a Google search. [My emphasis added.]

Now do you hear the bells? It’s no longer just an issue of search queries being subpoenaed — your desktop could be, too.

Monday, March 13 … Gonzales v. Google. Pay attention.

Postscript, February 13: Rep. Edward J. Markey (MA) has introduced a bill (H.R. 4731) titled “Eliminate Warehousing of Consumer Internet Data Act of 2006“. In Section 3 he requires that:

An owner of an Internet website shall destroy, within a reasonable period of time, any data containing personal information if the information is no longer necessary for the purpose for which it was collected or any other legitimate business purpose, or there are no pending requests or orders for access to such information pursuant to a court order.

OK … someone please give me a good definition of “temporarily” (Google) and “reasonable period of time” (Markey).
