Flash! Google is Being Discontinued |
I’m shameless. I need attention, so I, um, accidentally wrote Google, when what’s being discontinued is Google Answers. But now that I’ve got your fleeting attention, let me explain. Google Answers lets you post a question that you want answered by any one of Google’s 500 screened researchers. You specify a price that you are willing to pay for the information, starting at $2.50. Once your question is answered it is added to the database so that others can browse or search it for free. You can also rate the response. The service never took off. People just don’t want to pay for information. (Which is why membership libraries such as Jenkins have to beg for members.) There are a few other similar services left: Yahoo Answers (which is actually pretty popular, but is not much more than a place to hangout and type mindless drivel), Windows Live QnA Beta, and Wondir. I’m hoping that Google Answers is just a start. Since Google gets something like 95% of their traffic from their top 3 services, perhaps they will prune other non-performers. Then maybe they can get back to concentrating on search. A guy can dream, can’t he? |

Lexis Founding Father Passes |
Saturday’s NY Times noted [registration required] the passing of H. Donald Wilson, a management consultant who wrote the original business plan for what has become LexisNexis. I’m sure they won’t mind if I quote a bit of the article: “In 1969, Mr. Wilson was asked by the Mead Corporation to assess a venture in computerized legal research that the company was considering. Mr. Wilson told his client that the searching of legal texts would be a useful tool for lawyers, as well as a promising business. He not only recommended that the company pursue the venture but also outlined a marketing plan for persuading law firms to adopt the technology.” BTW, that “promising business” earned $2.5 billion in 2005. |

LibWorm Announced |
Yesterday, while I was working on my final projects, news of LibWorm spread throughout the biblioblogosphere. LibWorm is a Librarianship RSS and Current Awareness Search by MedWorm’s Frankie Dolan and David Rothman. LibWorm lets you search for library news across over 1000 RSS feed (including blogs, journal tables of contents and more). I need to poke more before I give my official opinion - but the one thing missing is a way to see what feeds are included. If I find a journal RSS I want to share with others, I want to have an easy way to find out if its included and I did a few searches and browsed a bit, it was easy to find news (which is the point) but not the sources for the news (not the point - but a handy addition so that I dont waste peoples time with suggestions - like Jenkins Webblits). Read more from David himself or from LibWorms About page. |

Jenkins Reunites Twins Separated At Birth |
OK, I’m exaggerating. But at a recent CLE class held at Jenkins’ Computer Learning Center, two attorneys with the same name met for the first time. They had heard of each other — one had even received mail intended for the other — but their paths had never crossed before. Here they are: David B. Still is on the left, with David M. Still on the right.
