Goodbye To All That

In case you didn’t notice, on Tuesday Mcrosoft released Vista, the long-awaited, next-gen update to Windows XP.

From what I understand, most people were underwhelmed.

And with good reason. If you have an older PC, or if it is a low- to mid-range model, you’ll probably have to upgrade your hardware or you won’t be able to take advantage of all the new features of Vista, such as the 3D Aero interface.

I, personally, dealt with this the best way I knew how: last week I bought an iMac. It took less than 10 minutes to set it up and have it connect to our wireless gateway.

But hey, if you’re still gonna go through with that Vista thing, good luck with that.

The Right to Home School: A Guide to the Law on Parents Rights in Education
By Christopher J. Klicka

Education where the classroom is the home and the teachers are parents had been one of the major forms of education until the early 1900s. Today, home schools educate nearly one million children, and since 1982, 34 states have enacted laws specifically to protect the constitutional rights of these institutions.

Taking All the Fun Out of Google

Uber-Googler Matt Cutts blogged yesterday about a new algorithm Google has implemented to defuse Googlebombs.

In the past, Google tolerated Googlebombs because they were “reluctant to alter our results by hand in order to prevent such items from showing up.” But apparently Cutts and company got tired of complaints:

… over time, we’ve seen more people assume that they are Google’s opinion, or that Google has hand-coded the results for these Googlebombed queries. That’s not true, and it seemed like it was worth trying to correct that misperception.”

The most memorable Googlebomb is “miserable failure”. Previously, the #1 result for this query was George W. Bush’s bio page at Whitehouse.gov. It’s no longer anywhere to be found in the results list. The current #1 page is a December 2003 article from the BBC, describing the Bush Googlebomb. Which, when you think about it, accomplishes the same thing as the original Googlebomb.

Mayor Street’s a Clown

Don’t look at me. I’m just quoting what a Wikipedia user said about our beloved mayor (see the second paragraph in the “Biographical details and political career” section.) This was reported in today’s Inquirer, btw.

This episode demonstrates — to me, at least — how small the world has become. Based on the IP address, 12.198.160.151, the vandal was probably at a hotel in the U.S. Halfway around the world a Chinese writer named Andrew Lih (Fuzheado) repaired the damage less than 11 hours later.

To paraphrase Hamlet, “What’s Mayor Street to him, or he to Mayor Street, That he should edit for him?”

Munching on Cheerios, Thinking About Blogging

KYW1060 this morning mentioned that Firstgov.gov, the U.S. government portal, has changed its name to USA.gov.

Must have been a slow news day.

Hmm, thought I. Haven’t been contributing anything to the Jenkins blog lately. This story will do nicely.

So there we are.

For your viewing pleasure, here’s the earliest incarnation of Firstgov.gov available from the Internet Archive.
