How to Correct Barrel/Lens Distortion in Your Photos |
|
You might notice that when you take a picture of a building or other structures with straight vertical edges, that the closer to the edge of the photograph it is, the more curved it becomes:
This is inevitable with any camera with a circular lens, and the angle will be different depending on where you’re standing (relative to the horizon line). It may not be apparent, and you may not even care, but if you’re like me and that sort of stuff drives you kinda crazy, here’s what you can do to fix it in Photoshop: Filter > Distort > Lens Correction… On the right-hand side, there should be a “Transform” section where you can play around with the Vertical and Horizontal Perspective. Keep in mind that when you do this, take the rest of the picture into consideration so that a section doesn’t become too “pinched.” You’ll also probably have to crop the photo a little bit to compensate for edges that are being tucked in. Hit OK and you’re done:
It’s amazing how the human eye can ignore this distortion when we’re at the scene and we still interpret the columns as being 90-degree vertical lines. For my next webblit, I’ll take a look at Picnik and some other online photo editors that you can use instead of Photoshop. |

The Supreme Court: The Personalities and Rivalries That Defined America |
By Jeffrey RosenThe Supreme Court is the most mysterious branch of government, and yet the Court is at root a human institution, made up of very bright people with very strong egos, for whom political and judicial conflicts often become personal. In this compelling work of character-driven history, Jeffrey Rosen recounts the history of the Court through the personal and philosophical rivalries on the bench that transformed the law - and by extension, our lives. The heck with education stuff let’s go for the dineros |
|
Last week Thomson agreed to sell its Thomson Education unit for $7.75 billion dollars. That includes Thomson Gale, which publishes InfoTrac and LegalTrac, two databases that we make available to our members. Today Thomson announced that they have agreed to merge with Reuters. The new company will be called Thomson-Reuters. (Thankfully, they decided not to try to come up with a name that suggests synergy but ends up sounding more like the name of a prescription allergy drug. Cingular … Lucent … you get what I mean.) The current leader in the financial news market is Bloomberg, which has a 33% share. The combined Thomson-Reuters — numbers 3 and 2 behind Bloomberg — will be about the same size. Hmm … what does that remind me of? Oh yeah, the Yahoo-Microsoft merger rumors that were flying around last week, too. The deal is valued at $17.2 billion U.S. dollars. |
