Skype President Josh Silverman has just announced that the company has been acquired by a group of venture capitalists, including Marc Andreesen, of Mosaic browser fame. Online auction site eBay still retains 35% ownership in the independent company. Back in April Skype’s founders had announced that they were trying to raise funds to buy their progeny back. Apparently that hasn’t worked out, and they’ve decided on a different route: revoke the licensing agreement with eBay for the core technology behind Skype. That little tidbit wasn’t mentioned in Silverman’s post. |
