| Treading Lightly Here |
Yesterday tech columnist John C. Dvorak published an article titled Is US CIO Vivek Kundra a Phony? He didn’t pull any punches and challenged the Obama administration to provide proof for Kundra’s assertions that he:
Dvorak retreated on a couple of these points after his article was posted. Regarding the MS in IT: “After initially posting this article the degree has cropped up apparently at the nearby University Campus in 2001.” And the teaching gig: “In a conversation he had with [tech guru and blogger] Om Malik [Kundra] confirms having a teaching job at the University College. I have not verified it, but it’s probably true.” But there are two problems still remaining with Kundra’s CV: “I hope there is some real explanation for what is going on here … I hope he has a biology degree from Maryland. And I hope Kundra can produce some records for his CEO tenure at Creostar indicating that it became a multimillion dollar company that was somehow ignored by Hoovers and D&B once it became successful.” The last point is, imho, the more important and serious one. According to Dvorak: “… there was indeed a Creostar in Arlington, VA. It was founded in 2004 with the contact being Vivek Kundra. The last record for the company (online) showed sales of $67,000 with one employee — apparently Kundra, the CEO.” I’m not a real journalist, so I’m gonna reserve judgment here. But I have to agree with Dvorak when he says that something’s fishy about all this. |

| Mr. Macy’s No Longer on Mr. Gimbel’s Board |
Note: This was originally scheduled to be posted on Monday August 2, but was delayed by hardware problems. Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, has resigned from Apple’s board. And here’s why: “Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.” Note to Apple: I’ll nod my head when you say “mutually decided”. But I’m not buying it. |

| If You Give Me 80 Thou, I’ll Be Glad To Go Away For a Year |
Heck, I’ll stay away as long as you want, at least until the money runs out. The NY Times has an interesting article about how Skadden Arps is offering their 1,300 associates a deal: they’ll pay them a third of their base pay if they go away and not cost them any more money for a year. It’s an alternative to layoffs. About 10% of the associates have expressed interest. The story focuses on sixth-year associate Heather Eisenlord, who will take an $80,000 one-year buyout. Her plans? “Although she’s not yet sure exactly what she’ll be doing on her trip, she has some ideas. She would like to teach English to monks in Sri Lanka and possibly help bring solar power to remote parts of the Himalayas. She’ll probably hit 10 to 15 destinations around the world, most likely practicing not-for-profit law wherever she can be helpful.” Can you say “Type A personality”? |

| Time To Grow Up |
TechCrunch reports that visitors to linkedIn (the social networking site for grown-up professionals) was up 22% from December 2008-January 2009. Total minutes spent on the site doubled in one month. This is predictable. When you’re out of work, you don’t have time to send cowbells to your friends. You need to network professionally. Personally, I spend way more time tending to my LinkedIn profile (and my Twitter feed) than my Facebook account. |
