In 1983 the ABA replaced the Model Code of Professional Responsibility with the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. A majority of states now pattern their ethics rules after the Model Rules.

Legislative History, Reports Sources for Ethics Opinions

The ABA's Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility periodically publishes formal and informal opinions. They are located in the reference room. Formal Opinion: a subject of general interest to the bar. Informal Opinion: a response to a specific inquiry relating to a particular set of facts.
