PA Legislative Histories Search Tips
Title Search

  • The title field will search Jenkins' brief descriptions of the legislative histories.

  • Enter a single search word and select submit. Example:

  • For multi-term queries, enter words separated by spaces. The AND, OR, NOT connectors and quotation marks (" ") are not supported by this database. Terms will be searched as a phrase. Example:

The database will search the titles of the legislative histories and look for any occurrences of public and school where these terms appear next to each other and in that order.

  • Searches are not case sensitive and can be entered in uppercase, lowercase or any combination.

  • Common words (called stop words) such as a, of, the, etc., are searchable.

  • Single words are automatically "stemmed". However, only the last term of a multi-term query is stemmed. Examples:

    • A search for work will retrieve works, worker's, workmen's, etc.

    • A search for municipal author will retrieve municipal authority and municipal authorities, but not municipality authority or municipality authorities.

  • The title field does not include suffixes such as "Special Session".
Act and P.L. #
  • Enter a number only.

  • The Act or P.L. # fields cannot be searched in conjunction with the title field.

  • The Act and Pamplet Law (P.L.) numbers can be found at the end of the relevant Purdon’s Statute section. For example, in 1984, Feb. 12, P.L. 26, No. 11 sec. 3 effective Oct. 1, 1984, the Pamplet Law number is 26 and the Act number is 11.

Year Range

Enter years in the form of YYYY. Examples:

  • For legislative histories from 1991 only, type 1991 in both the "In or after" box and the "In or before" box.

  • For legislative histories from 1984 to 1989, type 1984 in the "In or after" box and 1989 in the "In or before" box.
