Keyword Search Guide
Phrases
Enclose phrases in quotation marks. Example: "traumatic brain injury".
Connectors
Use AND to retrieve catalog records containing both terms. Example: employment AND discrimination. Note: If you prefer, you can simply enter a space instead of the AND operator.
Use OR to search either of 2 terms. Example: lawyer OR attorney.
Use AND NOT to eliminate an unwanted term. Example: "intellectual property" AND NOT trademark.
Use NEAR to retrieve catalog records containing your terms within 10 words of each other. Example: subprime NEAR credit. Note: If you wish to specify a different number of words, use WITHIN n. Example: subprime WITHIN 3 credit.
Nesting
Use parentheses to group synonyms together. Example: (email OR e-mail) AND privacy.
Truncation
Words may be truncated to retrieve variable word endings as follows:
Use a ? to match a single character. Example: docket? will retrieve docket and dockets. Also wom?n will retrieve woman and women.
Use * to match 1-3 characters. Example: polic* will retrieve policy, policies, policing, etc.
Use ** to match any number of characters, up to a maximum of 50. Example: polic** will retrieve all of the above, plus policeman, policymaker, policymakers, etc.
