Pennsylvania Legislative Histories Search Tips
Year
- Enter a year in the form YYYY.
- The drop-down menu gives you 4 year options: Equal to, Before, After, and Between.
- To use Between, enter a starting and ending year. The entire range of years, including the starting and ending years, will be searched.
Title/Popular Names
- Enter one or more words, separated by spaces.
- Do not include the Boolean AND, OR, NOT connectors or quotation marks (" ").
- Punctuation will be ignored.
- Searches are not case sensitive.
- Common words (called stop words) such as a, of, the, etc., are searchable.
- Words are automatically stemmed to include plurals and word variants. Thus, a search for work will retrieve works, worker's, workmen's, homework, etc.
P.L., Act, J.Res., HB or SB
- Enter a Pamphlet Law, Act, Joint Resolution, House Bill, or Senate Bill number only in the appropriate box.
- Numbers are not automatically stemmed. Thus, a search for 14 will not retrieve 140, 514, etc.
- The numbering of Pamphlet Laws, Acts, Joint Resolutions, and House and Senate Bills begins over again during each session of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Thus, a number search may return more than one result. To limit your results, combine a number search with a year search.
- Pamphlet Law and Act numbers can commonly be found at the end of the relevant Purdon's Statute section. For example, in 1984, Feb. 12, P.L. 26, No. 11 sec. 3 effective Oct. 1, 1984, the Pamphlet Law number is 26 and the Act number is 11.
