- Business.com
Primarily a business-focused search engine and directory. For many large, publicly-traded companies, it provides detailed information, including officers, financials, competitors and stock data.
- Central Contractor Registration (CCR)
Central database of more than 430,000 companies and agencies wanting to do business with the U.S. federal government. Search by business name, city, state or zip code; limit by industry or type of business.

A good checklist for researchers.
- Corporate Information
Index to 31,000 company profiles from Wright Investors’ Service. Company Snapshot is free; other data, such as the Comparative Business Analysis requires a subscription.
- CorpTech
Features a database of profiles of more than 90,000 U.S. technology companies. Searching is free. The Capsule Profile, which requires a subscription, includes corporate family information.
- Directory Assistance Plus, Service of infoUSA
Search more than 12 million U.S. businesses (by name/location) and 100 million residents (by name/location or telephone number). Database is similar in size and content to Zapdata.
- Dun & Bradstreet (D&B)
Features a database of 14 million public and private companies. Information includes financial data, payment history, public filings, and history and operations. Prices vary from $10 for the Company Profile to $120 for the Comprehensive Report. Sample reports are available. D&B also has a low-cost ($5 per report) service called Zapdata.
- freeERISA.com EIN Finder
Database contains more than 4.9 million companies with retirement plans with 100 or more plan members that file IRS Form 5500. Search by company name or use the EIN reverse lookup. Non-subscribers get 5 free searches.
- Hoover's, D&B
Covers 16.5 million public and private companies (43,000 in-depth) and 14 million executives. Free information includes financials (3 years), news headlines, press releases, and SEC filings. Subscribers get access to overview and history, executive biographies, competitors, historical financials, family tree, and more. In 2007, Hoover's plans to add data for the top 250,000 private companies in the U.S., ranked by total sales.
- Mergent Online
Subscription service covering 15,000 U.S. public companies and 20,000 non-U.S. companies.
- Moody's Investors Service
Subscription service for ratings, research, economics, data, directory, managed funds, insurance.
- OneSource Business Browser
Fee-based service with a database of 1.7 million companies; about 1/2 are from the U.S.
- SkyMinder.com
Subscription site covering 46 million companies; about 1/3 are from the U.S.
- Thomas Register
Over 650,000 companies (in the U.S. and Canada) and 67,000 categories. Must register to use site.
- Tracked.com
Search for financials, executive pay, and insider trading data, then share this information with other users with whom you connect.
